If you are about to start lessons, this is usually the first question on your mind. In our experience teaching first-time drivers, it comes up in almost every opening lesson. The short answer is that it varies a lot from one learner to the next. Some people feel road ready in a few months, while others take a year or more. Your age, how often you practise, and the support you get all play a part.

The honest answer: it depends

There is no single number that fits everyone. A confident 25 year old who practises three times a week will progress faster than a nervous teenager who only drives on weekends. What we tend to see is that steady, regular practice beats cramming every time. As a rough guide, many learners need somewhere between 30 and 50 hours of professional lessons before they are test ready, on top of supervised practice with family or friends.

What the rules require in Australia

Australia uses a graduated licensing system, so you cannot rush straight from your first lesson to a full licence. You start on your learner (L) permit, then move to provisional (P) plates once you pass your test.

Most states set a minimum amount of supervised driving before you can sit the practical test. Depending on where you live, that often means logging around 100 to 120 hours behind the wheel, including a set number of night hours, with a minimum period on your Ls if you are under 25. Rules differ between New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and the other states, so always check your local transport authority for the exact requirement.

This means the calendar matters as much as your skill. Even a fast learner usually needs the better part of a year to build up the required hours.

How many lessons will you actually need?

For a complete beginner, a common path looks like this:

A handful of early lessons to get comfortable with the basics: steering, gears, braking and observation. A middle stretch focused on real traffic, roundabouts, lane changes and parking. A final block sharpening up for the test, including reversing, hazard awareness and independent driving.

Many learners reach this point after 30 to 40 structured lessons. We build each learner plan around where they actually are rather than a fixed package, so the count rises or falls with progress. If you are learning in a manual car, expect a few extra sessions compared with automatic.

A good way to [learn how to drive → /SERVICE-PAGE-URL] sooner is to pair structured lessons with regular practice in between, so each session builds on the last.

What affects how quickly you learn

A few factors make a real difference to your timeline. Practice frequency matters most: two or three short drives a week beat one long session a fortnight. The learners who progress fastest are usually the ones who treat it as a routine.

Age and confidence matter, as younger learners pick up the mechanics quickly while older ones bring stronger road awareness. A patient, structured instructor also saves you wasted hours. Manual takes longer than automatic for most people, and nerves are normal and ease with repetition.

Tips to get test ready sooner

You can shorten the journey without cutting corners, and these are the same habits we coach in every lesson. Book lessons regularly so skills stay fresh.

Mix professional lessons with supervised practice so you clock up hours and apply what you have learned. Practise in different conditions, including wet weather, night driving and busier roads, so nothing on test day feels new.

And be honest with your instructor about what worries you, so they can spend time on it.
